Zumba Fitness with Anna

Feel the music, find the rhythm in your body!

3-12-2012
The spring is almost here!  It's time to get on to the New Year's resolution you made in the beginning of the year -- to lose that extra pounds, to eat healthier, to get more energy in doing what you love to do.  I'm more committed than ever to provide my students with the best class I can give -- I'm pursing a couple of certifications this year -- from a desire to better serve my chair-bound students (yes, I'm teaching 3 Zumba Gold Chair classes now) and really understand what's involved in senior adult fitness -- I am getting certified by SFA (American Senior Fitness Association) to be a senior fitness instructor, hopefully by May. .

Margaret
Featured Student: Margaret
You can't miss Margaret with her red Zumba shoes in the front row of my Windsor Zumba Gold class, dancing like there's no tomorrow.  No one can believe that she's hitting the 80's and going strong!  Exercise has always been a part of her life -- yoga, pilate, walking, etc. but she didn't start exercising regularly until she retired in 1992. Now she exercise five times a week by participating in different group exercise classes and walking.  She had a spine operation in 2009 and thought she couldn't do something like Zumba but after giving it a try at the Windsor Senior Center, she's hooked. "Dance is great -- the music really get you going.", she says. On her spare time, Margaret enjoys volunteer tutoring and working on her garden and participates in Zumba Gold demos.

Zumba Toning Sticks
What is Zumba Gold Toning?
This new and exciting program brings together the energy of the Zumba rhythms designed for the older active adult and the innovative muscle training of using light-weight toning sticks that you can shake like maracas. It's fun, different, safe and effective for the older and beginner participant.

About Zumba:
1. It's a great dynamic core workout
It works your entire torso section!  Stronger, defined abs and back!  Can you say swimsuit?!?!?!

..
2.  High caloric expenditure
Burn 500-1000 calories in 1 HOUR!
..
3.  Easy, non-intimidating learning environment
You'll learn how to dance without even realizing it.  EVERYONE can ZumbaŽ, whether you know how to dance or not!
..
4.  Weight loss!
You'll drop so many pounds you'll have to go buy a whole new wardrobe!
..
5.  Positive self-image
You won't only look good, you'll feel good!
..
6.  A sculpted body
It's a comprehensive workout.  Your entire body will be reshaped from head to toe!
..
7.  Exercise in disguise
You'll be having so much fun you won't even realize your working out.

Zumba Tips:
1. Wear loose-fitting comfortable workout clothing
2. You should wear athletic shoes or dance sneakers. Shoes that allow you to slide and twist a little will help prevent joint injuries. You can also try putting some masking tape on the soles at the ball of your foot. Bare feet not recommended.
3. Drink water BEFORE, DURING and AFTER class! Very important to stay well hydrated.
4. Warm up, stretch and cool down IS necessary.
5. Go at your own pace. Do not kill yourself. Listen to your body. If you feel tired or out of breath,  slow down or stop and rest awhile.  It takes time to build up stamina.
6. Do not worry about doing the steps right the first time. We are here to exercise, and this is  not a dance class.  You will get better as you go. We are not judging your dance skills. We all are at different fitness levels and we are all coming together to have a good time.  The most important thing is that you are moving and having fun!
7. Maintain a good posture, and move from the core.
8. Feel free to add your own "flavor" to your movement -- listen to the music, find the rhythm in your body and express yourself!

What is Zumba Gold?
I love teaching Zumba Gold!
Do you love to dance? Want to lose some weight and get in shape but having a hard time finding a program you really enjoy doing and can stick with?  Have tried Zumba but finding it too fast/intense and intimidating?  Come try out Zumba Gold!
My Zumba Gold classes are guaranteed to lift your spirit and leave you sweaty. Zumba Gold is best suited for the active baby boomer and de-conditioned beginners...if you have been intimidated by the fast "looking" pace of Zumba, I can get you started..you will feel confident in little or no time... Zumba Gold have little to no impact and fewer twisting movements than a regular Zumba class. It is a low to moderate dance inspired fitness class that gets the heart pumping -- it is for anyone looking for a fun, 'feel good' workout that has little stress on one's body.
Just like regular Zumba, Zumba Gold incorporates Latin and international rhythms such as: Cha Cha, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Belly Dance, Tango, Disco, Hip Hop, Disco, Cumbia and many more, at a lower intensity. In Zumba Gold, the basic steps an introduced at a slower pace and there's much more repetition of moves and the transitions between moves are made much easier. There's also elements of functional fitness -- balance training, range of motion, core training and lower body strengthening. With Zumba Gold Toning, resistance training with a light-weidht toning sticks are added. It will be a fitness program that you will stick with because you will be having so much fun that you won't realize that you are exercising!
Zumba Gold is the only format I teach now -- check my class schedule for locations near you.

Here's another Zumba Gold class video in Spanish -- various people in various age/shape/sizes are all grooving to the same music -- having a blast!

What kind of shoes to wear for Zumba?
Wear the right shoes and your Zumba class will be a more pleasant experience!
The best shoes for zumba are ones that give you multi-directional support, cushioning and have minimal tread on the ball of the foot. There are many dance-fitness shoes available.  The shoes you choose should have some cushion or shock absorbance in it. A couple of styles that are popular with people who Zumba are the Z1 Zumba Sneakers, Glagla shoes, Bloch Dance Sneakers, Nike Shox O Drive, Nike Musique, and the Nike Ballo. I personally love Bloch dance sneakers and own many pairs.  They come in UK show sizes and is generally 1 1/2 to 2 sizes smaller than US shoe size.  There are a couple of local dance shoe stores in Santa Rosa -- Dance Gear on Armory Dr.. and Dance Shop in Petaluma. Once you try a pair on for size, internet is the best place to shop for discounts. You can get the Zumba Z1 Sneakers @ the Zumba storeFor more Zumba shoes advice, check this out!

What is Zumba Gold on Chair?
Zumba Gold Chair is for the active older adult, wheelchair or deconditioned participants, or anyone who may not be able to stand up for long periods of time while exercising. Most of the class session will be done seated.  I started teaching this format at some private assisted living places throughout Sonoma county.  Here's an example Zumba Gold chair class...

Who Can do Zumba?

The greatest part about Zumbais that you don't have to know how to dance. Anyone can do it whether you are young, old or in-between.  There are no requirements other than liking music and wanting to move and have fun.  A typical Zumba class will consists of a warm-up session, a bunch of songs fast and slow, and a cool-down.  Most classes last about an hour.  Zumba is the most exciting workout ever and is great for the mind, body and soul! It is designed to put "FUN" back into fitness.  Just don't forget to wear comfortable workout clothes, a workout shoe that you can pivot in, bring water to drink, and a towel to wipe off your sweat.
